Install Maximizing Mindset In Your Team, Before You Plan Your Organization’s Next Year’s Goals

In October 2018 we met the Sr. Vice President and the HR Head of an organization, who are global providers dedicated to financial technology solutions. They represented an organization which is present in more than 130 countries, have more than 20,000 clients and 52,000 employees worldwide.

The HR head had got our reference from world’s largest and a 5-decade old forging company, for whom we are working across the group to initiate organization-wide transformation on Navigating Through Change.

We had a meeting at 12.45 PM IST. After lots of scrutiny and verification process – as it normally happens in IT companies we were directed to the 5th floor where the HR head was waiting for us to arrive. She guided us to the cabin of the Sr. Vice President. We were really excited to meet the man who had left India 7 years ago with a promise to return more successful. He truly had become one when we read 19 recommendations on his LinkedIn page, which described him as a great visionary, results-oriented, an impressive presenter, very sharp and focused, most straightforward and fearless leader.

From the insider information, we got the news that he is very intelligent, result oriented and above all will ask for claims and proofs for whatever we say. We were all ready with it, assuming him to be so.

As we entered his cabin he looked to be a very simple man wearing a chequered shirt and spectacles with a black frame. He had the perfect looks of a matured techie guy, who was blended with western sophistication. His trophies and praises in cricket tournaments and technical certifications talked about the man – who was passionate in cricket, technology, and business.

The HR head formally introduced us (NuTurns) to the VP by saying that “my husband who looks after the international sales had experienced their business simulations and NuTurns in his organization.” “My husband strongly recommended them to us”. That was a great start for us. On the first ball – a home run!

After exchanging formal greetings, we introduced ourselves as a 20-year-old organization having passion and ability to facilitate playful and powerful business simulations and NuTurnsTM interventions.

After listening to us patiently, the VP shared his need. He was planning a one day off-site. He wanted to take his 20+ years experienced 15 senior managers to review the business performance for 2018 and share clarity for the upcoming year – 2019. And in the second half of the day, he wanted to organize some team building program to engage and bond his team.

This was probably the 100th time or maybe even more than that, that we have been getting similar requirements across the sectors – manufacturing, IT, pharma, media, and BFSI. And for all of these requirements, our answer is the same. This is what we answered to our techie business head.

“Don’t give clarity to your people, but get clarity from them. Don’t tell them, but ASK them. Don’t feed them. Let them figure it out on their own. Let’s harness their collective intelligence and give them the feeling of – “We did it”. Let you (VP) and us act as midwives facilitating the whole process. Let your people be in the limelight and not YOU”.

At NuTurnsTM , after lots of trials and errors, we have formulated a simple, empowering and playful process where people come up with individual ideas and then come together as a group filter out the best ideas which could decide the business’s strategic focus for the coming year. Our NuTurnsTM process provokes people to think in diverse areas apart from their own departments or areas of expertise viz. technology, customer retention, revenue, operations, people (employees), products, brand, and processes”

“90% of the people have a tendency to survive. They think incrementally and too on the footprints of past performance. Most people don’t have the MAXIMIZING mindset –  the mindset of PLAYING TO WIN BIG. They have a surviving mindset of PLAYING NOT TO LOSE. To install the maximizing mindset we start NuTurns NavigatorTM with one of our well-known business simulations called – Diamonds of Amazonia. This simulation positively challenges the surviving mindset of people so that they can maximize their goals for the next year and look beyond what has been achieved”

After listening to our experience and a round of questions the meeting ended on a positive note requesting for the quote and tentative dates for executing the program.
