Rocket is terrific, realistic and quite an effective simulator. It experientially helps us in understanding how all functions are equally important in achieving the organizational goals.

Any good organization develops its high potentials with the idea of giving them more exposure and cross-functional assignments, so that they get trained to see the forest and not just a tree. Rocket plugs this gap very well and that’s the reason one of the participants shared – “Rocket is like a mini-MBA in a day!”
Teams are able to see (dashboard) and experience the price (falling cash flows) of not working together as one unit. As the game progresses to advanced levels teams are able to see the profits and payoffs of working as a collaborative team. Collaboration is not just about playing together or sharing resources. It’s about exchanging and acting upon crucial information that results into profits.
Getting a team to work together can often be a challenge. ROCKET tackles directly self-defeating cultures of Blame, Denial and Excuses.
Every function’s decision impacts the bottom line. Every function’s decision impacts other functions. A small change in a function impacts the whole system. Participants experience how all functions are interdependent and have a causal relationship. Participants are able to see the relationships among pieces of the system and how do they affect understanding of the whole.
Teams understand other functions’ processes, challenges and difficulties. They also recognize their importance and contribution to the great game of business. Those who have played Rocket say that they feel as though they have actually run this business and as such have formed better empathy and understanding of the pressures.
Some people are born to manage and some aren’t. ROCKET will help identify who is ‘getting it’ and who isn’t. There are many promotions that just aren’t great fits; establish this before you make the promotion and you’ll save yourself grief and your employee’s grief too. ROCKET helps to find the natural born leaders.
Participants run a commercial business and dramatically improve the performance of the business as they make key strategic business decisions and react to external pressures
Participants are encouraged to challenge the status quo and to out-perform. The simulation requires them to display mental agility, strategic planning and accelerated information processing. They also are challenged to always look for better solutions, and ways to improve processes and the business overall.
Cash flows, profits, productivity, direct costs, WIP, running expenses are some the concepts which participants get hang of it experientially and in detail. Participants learn to manage cash flows, harvest profits and make important investment decisions.
Context
The sales and production heads, who also sit on the board of directors of a $1 billion company, desired to integrate their functions for timely and flawless development of New Product Development (NPD). The communication lines, processes and systems were enabled for the routine business, but not for NPD. The problem was that routine business was going down. But there lied immense opportunity in NPD.
How it was used
A one day off-site was organized to play Rocket. The heads of both production and sales with their direct reports participated in the simulation. In the gameplay participants were assigned the roles in functions in which they had less exposure and experience.
